It wasn't bad. The concept was interesting. I honestly thought there was a sequel published, so I was disapointed to find out there wasn't. I wish we could learn more about what went on Mars after the colony was abandoned. I also didn't understand how Carver planned to trap Zach and Ryker on the Gateway. When the ship was activated, it was clear they (or people, at least) were inside of it, and the emergency porotcol blocked the airblock leading to it. The only reason Ryker was left behind was because he stepped out, which was not a given. I liked the detail about how irogen came to be, but I also didn't know why Zach didn't wake up Cora from cryogen, when he came up with a plan to save them. The time skips felt fine for the action taking place in space, but a bit forced for the events on Earth.

Now I had no idea I would like this book as much as I did. Off the bat, we got Earth just burning up...a little too real if you ask me. I loved the multi-POV and mixing it up with the time jumps, I was having fun. Did a good job at building tension, a horror/thriller vibe was right around the corner. Kind of did want it to be horror for a minute, thought it'd be so with the discovery of the prisoner. Erik's situation was saddening and jarring waking up to losing your sense of normalcy. No lie, I wasn't ready for Earth to be destroyed. Then that sense of helplessness when there is no guide to survive was such a strong part of the last third of the book. The only issue I had was the attitude and reactions didn't match the ages, read this more as a YA.

This book had a really cool premise, but the character building and story telling were just not there for me. It reads like a books that should cater to children/preteens but the story tries to cater to adults. It takes itself too seriously, the adults act and think like high school students, and for a book talking about a lost colony on mars(the premise that hooked me) we spend > 2 chapters max on Mars at all. I think the author has promise but this book probably needed a couple more edits, and maybe more outside opinions before being published. It reads like a first draft on wattpad. Instead of trying to write adults who have been through trauma and are facing real adult situations, it may be easier for the author to write what he knows, which would be 18 year olds.

I love this book. I love the writing style, the whole dystopian vibe, and of course Ryker. I like how it felt like the 100, which is my favorite dystopian series. I cannot wait for the next book!!!
