“Better to stay alive," I said. "At least while there's a chance to get free." I thought of the sleeping pills in my bag and wondered just how great a hypocrite I was. It was so easy to advise other people to live with their pain.”

Wow. 

I don't often pick up modern classics. Or even older ones. It not something I'm proud of - I'd like to be one of those 'well-read' university students - but the books just don't appeal to me.

This book took me on a journey.

Kindred is a brutal and confronting novel follows a woman at the cusp of the centenary of American Independence, Dana, as she finds herself constantly transported back in time to the antebellum south, where she must protect a white ancestor.

This is a complex book that plays with binary narrative of villainism and complicity.  It's written well and in a compelling way, but contains a wealth of information.

I will certainly be rereading and annotating this in a few years time.

Stunning, chilling. Took a long time to digest this one. Really makes you think and feel, about power, racism and internalized racism.

Sci-fi crossed with historical fiction. It had some outlander vibes, just based over the ocean in the US. The time travel element just felt a bit out there and the timing of visits seemed haphazard but can see why it was needed.

It was compelling, it was emotional, it was thoroughly frightening. Not only what was common practice in the time period in which they travelled to but the fact it didn't take long for them to slip into the expected roles of the time, albeit that would have somewhat been because of human instinct to survive.
