As Harry, Ron and Hermione return to Hogwarts for their third year things are tense. Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban. Enforcements have been called in to help guard the school. Everyone is on high alert. Cornelius Fudge believes Harry to be Sirius' target.

The third book is where I really got hooked on the series, and the same can be said this time around. The stakes are higher, the action really starts to take off, and I started to really feel invested in Harry's wellbeing. I also enjoyed learning more about past events and Harry's parents. And of course, the quidditch is so good in this one! I loved that it played a bigger role.
It's been said many times before, the writing isn't always fabulous, but the story is so entertaining. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is hands down my favourite thus far, bringing the storyline to a whole new level.

There is a lot more depth to what we learn about the town of Hogsmeade, its stores and their wares, including the tasty treats at the Three Broomsticks pub and Honeydukes candy shop, and all the mayhem that can be purchased from the joke shop. Fred and George Weasley, lively troublemakers, show off their favorites to their mother’s and teachers’ dismay.
There’s all sorts of clever wordplay - “Sirius” and “Remus Lupin” are my two favorite. There are funny bits about spells gone wrong, including one with errant vegetables. There’s further character development with Hermione’s unexpected sassiness adding pizzazz - plus it humanizes her and makes her more lovable, which is sometimes challenging given her absolute focus on rules and studying.
I could read this book another five times and still not grow tired of it.
