I love a good gothic mystery. Bridget is a female sleuth/anatomist investigating the disappearance of a "merrow", an Irish myth that's an angrier, dangerous version of a mermaid. The best part is the loyal ghost who's in love with Bridget who travels with her and keeps her safe. It's fantasy/science/mystery all in one.

Things in Jars is my first novel by Jess Kidd, and I am glad I started with this one. Kidd's latest novel is set in London, during the Victorian era. While the novel is a historical mystery, it is also based in fantasy. I requested this novel based on the setting and the genre I assumed it was in. While the fantastical aspects of the case were interesting, it seemed like the novel was overly descriptive. I enjoy when an author takes the time to show the reader what the time and place was like. In this case, being a mystery, this description takes away from the suspense. I loved the way Kidd writes her characters. Each feels so realistic, "creatures" or humans, and endearing. The characters alone had me invested in the story. Kidd is a good writer, and I am looking forward to reading [b:Himself|33023729|Himself|Jess Kidd|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1479741428l/33023729._SY75_.jpg|49612536] and [b:Mr. Flood's Last Resort|36373281|Mr. Flood's Last Resort|Jess Kidd|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1520867298l/36373281._SY75_.jpg|57925204].

This was a great Victorian detective novel filled with humor, the macabre, the supernatural, and memorable characters. I loved the switch between timelines and getting to know Birdie as well as her ghostly companion. It was a fantastic read and, honestly, better than I had expected it to be! I’ve been trying to find more books like this but it has been an almost fruitless search. This book got me hooked on Jess Kidd’s storytelling and I can’t wait to read more by her! I recommend this book to pretty much anyone asking for books recommendations.
