Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling

3.0

Reading for a challenge. Own the physical but listened to audio. I did listen at a faster speed, but normal speed was insanely slow.

I do love the linking of small details and foreshadowing, but there are a lot of really dumb things. For example, "Harry's mysterious past" (mentioned in the few chapters) - how is it mysterious when we got a solid summary in book 1? Also last book Harry said the Dursley's didn't starve him but that's also wrong. It's kind of insane how abusive they were and that parents let their kids read about such a horrible situation? Also JK is quite fatphobic (among so many other things).

The house point system is broken - last year they got 5 points each for defeating the troll but Hermione wracked up 20 points by answering questions in class?

A lot of characters are quite bland or steroetypical (for example, Snape just bending the rules all the time, no girls on the Slytherin team etc). A lot of attitudes (Snape, Dumbledore knowing but not doing, Harry keeping secrets) get old quickly.

Colin and Neville are baby.

The books are ok but not great. Why did this series have such a chokehold on us???
