This will be an interesting book club book for sure - not sure I really liked it though. Creepy protagonist and story.

Five stars because of the way the story unfolds.
Koch takes us on what starts as a breezy summer stroll, which becomes a trot, which becomes a run down a steep hill and then you trip and fall and roll off a cliff and hit your head and all your other body parts on sharp rocks until you end up alone at the bottom asking yourself 'what the hell just happened?'

My affinity for each of the characters evolved greatly over the course of this book, much to my surprise. It makes me wonder to what lengths I would fight for my child or spouse if they did something illegal.

I was hesitating between four and five stars for quite some time. It ended up being five because, despite its flaws, which I won't go into as they'd be spoilers, it has some truly brilliant aspects which I will not forget in a hurry, and it conveys some brave and important messages. Also it was totally unputdownable and kept me up far too late, always the sign of a good story!

I disliked all the characters, but needed to see how it ended - that's the only reason I didn't stop reading it. I disliked it immensely.
