Full disclosure I listened to this audiobook with quite large gaps between putting it down and picking it back up, and also wasn't fully paying attention all the time and was rushing to finish it before my reservation at the library ran out so ... not the most thorough way to read a book.

Nevertheless, it has been read! And an enjoyable reading experience at that. Martha Wells does such a great job of writing things that are funny, and human (particularly showing humanity through non-human characters) while also being stressful and mildly horrific. A lot of the political nuance got lost on me, which I hope to rectify by rereading this in the future more properly, but it was great fun. Loved everyone, also how queer it was so casually! Great vibes, good times and a mildly incomprehensible review. Huzzah.

I have mixed feelings on this one.

I really liked the world building and the concepts in this, and I was interested in the plot and all the characters. But I really don't think one book is enough, so I hope the author decides on a sequel.
It just felt like it really needed more time and space to deliver on all the set up and let us get invested in the interesting cast of characters.

The world building was good, but there was a lot of it. And I felt with it only being a standalone, there wasn't enough time to understand how the world worked enough for the impact of certain plot points to really hit.

i hated it, it was so difficult. It felt like a fever dream, of constant politik and confusion.
