It cannot be denied that Reid is a talented and captivating author, but I can’t consciously recommend reading from a white cisgender, hetero woman who appropriates queer history or multiracial experiences in her storytelling. Especially when there are a bounty of actually queer, actually biracial authors to enjoy stories from. At least for me as a bisexual, brown reader, its uncomfortable for someone who does not experience this marginalization to tour and play around in these complex identities.

*Spoiler ahead*

Spoiler While I could tolerate most of the beginning half of the book before I learned more about Reid’s identity and habitually appropriative writing, it was the use of the Stonewall riots and the AIDS epidemic in this storyline that left the worst taste in my mouth.

easy, slower placed read. story was well told. & I would love to see this as a movie or short series! The husbands were such a small part of the story. Yes, they make up the whole book lol but there is only one romantic relationship this book is truly about. Monique’s character was flat to me. idk I could have done without the storyline… I know she served as the narrator of the story and we know she’s connected to Evelyn somehow from the start, so she “needs” to be there. but idk her little personal chapters did nothing for me.
