Powerful, compelling indictment of the slaveholder. This young woman's courage is boundless.

I really enjoyed this even though it was so horrific. Harriet Jacobs was such a strong and fierce woman and mother, and her story is SO powerful

I am plagued by the suspician that "Harriet" included experiences of others in her narrative, because sheer logistics makes it unlikely she experienced every single one of these horrific events. That suspicion, for me, was counterproductive because it made me distrust the narrative as a whole.

This is now one of my favourite books ever. I was amazed and couldn't put it down!

This is such an important read and I believe it has many modern applications. The strength Jacob’s shows in her life story was so admirable, but she also does an amazing job being honest and showing the unhealable wounds slavery has given her. I read it for a class and the discussion we had really helped me appreciate it even more so I would suggest reading it in a group and having people to discuss it with.

Very interesting read. The author was a very strong willed and smart young woman who ran away to secure her freedom from slavery.
