This is the only book I've ever given 5 stars. When I picked it up from the store I couldn't believe how big it was, and I was expecting to get bored about halfway through but I was GRIPPED from beginning to end!

My favourite things about this book:
* every single chapter was so enthralling - I was literally dreaming about the plot at night
* the main character doesn't do a single thing that pissed me off. He was suspicious of the people I was suspicious off, cautious when he had to be, behaved when he should. Nothing takes me out of a book more than a main character doing something stupid, or missing an obvious clue
* I could not predict where the plot was going at any point. So many good twists and turns and I was just along for the ride
* always a plus to have well fleshed-out female characters, who actually feel like different, nuanced, respected people
* it was so well-written I felt like I was there (which was a bit gross during some of the gory scenes, but that just made it so much more realistic)
* the Will hierarchy and system was introduced in a way that I quickly understood what was going on, and the snippets from lessons made it feel a lot more realistic
* I cannot predict who is good and who is evil (and I suspect it's all a lot more nuanced than that)

What I didn't like about this book:
* the next one isn't out for another year??????!!!

Wowowowow. This book is 10/5 stars. The action. The setting. The TWISTS. I'm hooked. Will cry until the next is released.

This, this was something. And I mean that in a good way. It was a bit confusing at times just because so much was going on (especially in the beginning), but I got it after maybe 30-40 pages in. I really enjoyed this. I did have to put this book down at time just because of the anxiety it was giving me (anxiety in a good way; the stakes were high). This was very ancient Rome inspired which I loved, and it was done in a way that I  haven't seen before at all, which was very refreshing. It fed my need to read ancient mythology inspired works without repeating the same stuff over and over.
ALSO MINOR CHARACTER DEATH ?? HELLO ?? WHAT WAS THAT ??? GIVE ME CALLADIS BACK RN !!!
This book also really explored power dynamics, especially in government systems but it was done in a way which I felt was understandable, and well. A lot of politics and things motivated on a political basis were happening. But I do need the next one to come out like now please and thank you.
