Wow, I honestly didn't expect to like this book as much as I did. Alice's story is as equally inspiring as it is heart-wrenching. Stephanie Thornton writes beautifully as well, especially considering the 80-year timespan if the book, which is hard to pull off. This book is a must-read for any women interested in history or government.

This book sounded fascinating. I don't know a lit about the Roosevelt families. However, I was not able to connect to these characters. For me, the book felt like a history lesson not an interesting story. I learned some things but I was not pulled in.

I did not finish this book - it had nothing to do with the writing, but I could not find myself caring at all about Alice within the first 50 pages.

Maybe this was a case of "not the right book for me." I gave my ARC to my mother and will update this review if she finishes.

Alice Roosevelt was quite the character! I didn't know anything about her, or really a lot about the Roosevelt family, so I am grateful to be more informed. I enjoyed learning about her influence in politics her whole life and loved her relationship with her granddaughter.

Alice Roosevelt's popularity among the American people surpasses even that of her father, President Theodore Roosevelt. The more outlandish her behavior the more times she appeared in the newspaper the more beloved she was. Alice's life is full of love, learning, and pain. She becomes the wife of the Speaker of the House, the mistress of a member of Congress, the mother to a daughter who discovers the truth, and the grandmother who saves her granddaughter after a tragedy. At the end of her life, Alice was many things but the most important was memorable.

Alice Roosevelt, as told through the words of the author, was a pip (to use my Grandma's term)! She lived life how she wanted to and loved her family to the fullest. Thornton tells a wonderful story that encompasses all aspects of Alice's life - the good, the bad, and the ugly. There were moments in the story when I felt the writing lagged a bit but not enough to where I felt the need to stop reading. I look forward to reading more by this author and learning more about the lives of women who refuse to disappear into the background.
