Everything about this book worked.
The plot, the pace, the character growth, the dialogues, the descriptions, everything fit together beautifully.
One of my biggest issues with the prequel was how slow it was in parts. I now think it was just that Ms. Keaton was trying to establish her world and got a little carried away. Not so in this book. The motivations behind characters' behaviour are getting increasingly clearer. All in all, I loved it.
Bonus: Sebastian is badass and actually developed into a worthy male lead. :D

Ari discovered while searching for her biological parents that she is a descendent of Medusa. The goddess of war Athena originally cursed Medusa with the ability to turn others to stone, but didn't think to exempt herself and other gods from the curse. All of Medusa's descendants reach the full potential of their curse by age 21, as well as have a daughter that will develop it. At the end of the first book Ari had a showdown with Athena at the cemetery in New 2. With the help of the Novem she was able to defeat Athena, but she took Violet with her when she disappeared. Violet is the young vampire child that makes up part of their gang of friends living in the Garden District. Athena also has Ari's father as a prisoner, and Ari will do anything to get them back safely.

****Spoilers****
Ari, Sebastien, and Henri (who shape-shifts into a hawk) find their way into Athena's palace, only to be captured before they are able to free their friends. She shoots Henri, and throws him over the mountain, believing him to be dead. While they are prisoners, Athena starves Sebastien until he can't resist drinking blood, a part of his vampire heritage he hoped never to succumb to. He refuses until he is about to die, and Ari makes him feed from her to keep him alive. Athena attempts to turn Sebastien into a Gorgon, but Ari turns him to stone to prevent the spell from taking place. Menai (daughter of Artemis) helps free Vi and Ari's father, but refuses to leave before Athena is dead. Ari stays behind to rescue Sebastien, and during the battle between Athena, her minions, and the Novem she is able to free him, and injure Athena.

I gave it 3.5 stars

Ari now knows what she is and has started her training and research in hopes of saving her Dad and Violet as well as beating Athena.

I didn't enjoy A BEAUTIFUL EVIL as much as I enjoyed book 1 DARKNESS BECOMES HER. The story dragged for half the book, there were quite a bit of depressing circumstances and It was a bit predictable at times. I did enjoy the action scenes and the general plot. Ari was still an interesting character. She is unique in her bloodline because of what her father is. I'm hoping now that he is in the story, book 3 will give us a bit more insight on what will happen to her when she is supposed to turn fully into a gorgon. I still really like the setting of New 2 and the different class of characters that come with it. Ari and Sebastian's relationship is interesting. They are definitely tested throughout A BEAUTIFUL THING but they seem to hold strong to each other. I loved Bran, he is proving to be fully on Ari's side and he seems to truly care about her.

I actually loved the ending. I'm excited to find out more about what Sebastian can do now and what that will mean for Ari in her fight against Athena. I'm also loving the fact that her Dad will be a bigger part of the story, it will be interesting to see what he brings to the situation. I will still be reading book 3 when it arrives.
