This was a very nice book I read for my World Lit for Children class. It follows one year in the life of a Ojibwa girl. There wasn't necessarily a typical plot structure with a beginning, middle, and end... it was really more events in her life, and showing how she grew up and started to realize who she was. It was very well done though, and I enjoyed the detailed glimpse into Ojibwe life. Also, my Professor said that this book takes place around the same time as the Little House on the Prairie books, which makes it an interesting contrast to that series!

I really enjoyed this. An excellent alternative to Little House on the Prairie. Beautiful.

Omkayas tucked her hands behind her head, lay back, closed her eyes, and smiled as the song of the white-throated sparrow sank again and again through the air like a shining needle, and sewed up her broken heart

(read for school)

oh my gooood. not only did this book teach me so much about Anishinaabe life and spirituality, it’s such a beautiful exploration of adolescence and how young people deal with grief. why don’t we read this in school??? so blown away!

I don’t read 9-12 books often, but when I do they are either great or overly juvenile that I can’t enjoy them. That wasn’t the case for this one. I happened to enjoy the story for its representation of indigenous culture and how beautifully it was told. I was shocked at how dark it managed to get whilst maintaining a kid friendly theme in many ways.
The exploration of spirituality and nature was beautiful as well.

Andeg really ate. I never expected a bird to pop off as much as he did.

Loved this book and wish it had been around when I was a girl.
