This book is wonderfully descriptive and really can help to replace my Laura Ingalls Wilder focus. It was a bit too much for both of my boys, especially my oldest who is more empathetic. It was very sad and very descriptive. I usually don't like that much description of nature, but it worked in this book.

This was a solid middle grade read, but it didn't blow my mind. This is not so much a plot driven novel, or even a character driven novel really, but a setting driven story if that makes sense. It tells of this family's life in a year's span of time, while showing how Omakayas and her family's culture was so connected to nature and animals. I definitely learned a lot. The ending was so sweet! Also, our protagonist was smart and determined, which was great to see in a 7 year old girl. We get to see her go through a few transformations as she grows, which was great to see. I'm glad I read this, and would consider reading the rest of the books in the series.

A story of 4 seasons living with the Ojibwe on Lake Superior back in 1847. There's smallpox, preparations for the winter, and interactions with animals that are supernatural, or at least to us modern-day Americans, but the way things were back then. It's a short read, made for children, it appears, but very enjoyable for adults!

P.S. I listened to the audiobook, which has different voices for the characters.
