Our beloved September returns to Fairyland, but all is not well. Consequences of her last visit are making themselves obvious, and September must turn from knight to bishop in order to save all our worlds.
This book takes us back to the wonderful land introduced in the first volume, and then promptly under it, as the title suggests. We meet old friends, and make new ones, and of course, there is a grand adventure. Personally, I particularly enjoyed learning some more about the particular science of Fairyland (Physicks), and about the Rules that are immutable, even if they are hidden. And sometimes, the solution is a Deus Ex Machina, but this is probably the only setting in which that totally makes sense. I liked the occasional breaking of the fourth wall and the interesting little interludes. All in all, again a most delightful read.

I seem to want to like these books more than I actually do. This series is tremendously creative, which I adore. If Goodreads did halfsies, I'd go 3.5, no doubt. But this one felt too... Disjointed? Perhaps? I didn't love it as much, for sure. I'll still finish the Fairyland series, but hope I like the next book more than this one, which I felt was a bit of a sophomore slump.

Speechless. I especially like Aubergine, the night dodo.

This is proving to be the most incredible series for children I've ever read as an adult. It's earnest and heartfelt but so, so clever.

I'm crying at the end of this. ITS SO GOOD and while it is a children's book, there is so so much more to this and so many layers. And ugh my heart is very full right now.
