Reading how the United States army systematically continued to create task forces that obfuscated evidence seeing the first and last names of men who committed these crimes and received no punishment was haunting. I see many men wearing Vietnam veteran hats, and now thinking back I wonder if they regret any similar actions they took. If they are haunted like many of the men who attempted to testify. If they see it as justifiable still.

Man, this was probably the best book to truly learn about the US’s atrocities in Vietnam, but it is so very difficult to get through. This one took awhile. Every trigger warning possible.

Crucial for understanding the scope of the Vietnam War and just how far the US government went to cover up war crimes. A truly haunting read that traces the lineage of colonialism and imperialism to present day with the rhetoric surrounding Israel’s and the west’s genocide in Palestine.

I knew some of the atrocities that happened during the American War in Vietnam but reading this made me realize just how ignorant the American public is about foreign wars- especially in the 20th century. Nothing, I repeat, nothing is more disgusting than the repugnant, inhuman glee that men have at any chance to have unchecked power over someone they think is lower than them. I will never look at a veteran from that war the same ever again.

A deep dive look at the horrific actions of so many Americans in Vietnam, which includes but isn’t limited to mass murder, torture, and a prolific culture of rape. Its a really heavy book and it’s amazing that the legacy of this war, despite having testimony from veterans that this all happened, has been so thoroughly sanitized that we’re trained as Americans to empathize with the soldiers that did horrendous things rather than their victims.
