Wow, very impressive kindle single. I essentially feel like I read close to a full length Bolton novel, as I found the plot so well developed. I even enjoyed how she managed to throw in some of Lacey's love-angst, yet in such a way the regular Bolton readers who miss the single will be unlikely to feel the loss with her next novel, due out shortly.

Another Bolton special. I know the author says she probably won't continue their story, but how I wish she would...

Good little Lacey Flint novella…

This is a novella-sized story which falls between the first and second books in the Lacey Flint series. Unusually for this author the plot is fairly clichéd; however, the quality of Bolton's writing always lifts her stories above the average. Here she gives us a hint of the creepiness and unease that she used to such great effect in the next full-length book in the series, [b:Dead Scared|13120860|Dead Scared (Lacey Flint, #2)|S.J. Bolton|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1344317211s/13120860.jpg|17595134], which for me was one of the best crime thrillers of 2012.

Lacey Flint's character changed quite a lot between the first book ([b:Now You See Me|9783200|Now You See Me (Lacey Flint, #1)|S.J. Bolton|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1312076936s/9783200.jpg|14673027]) and the second, and for the better, becoming warmer, more open, more likeable. In this story, she is more like she was in the first book, a maverick loner, but we see signs of her becoming more part of the team and more involved with the other recurring characters.

In summary, a good if short read and interesting for watching Flint's character develop. However, I would suggest newcomers should really read the first book first, partly because as a full-length novel it is a better story and partly because this one contains some hints that may give away elements of the plot of the previous one. For me, the series really came into its own with Dead Scared and I am eagerly waiting for the next one, [b:Like This, For Ever|15981701|Like This, For Ever|S.J. Bolton|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1353033224s/15981701.jpg|21734513], which is due to be published in April 2013.

Lacey Flint witnesses a horrible crime near her residence. A young Muslim man in his 20's is burned to death in a nearby public park. The police suspect a gang of young white hoodlums. Lacey investigates and quickly decides that there is more to this crime than it first appeared.
My only issue with this novella is that once Lacey gets on the trail of the killers, the novela wraps up a bit too quickly.

Great - just like everything in the Lacey Flint series. Only about 100 pages. A quick compulsive read.

Interesting short story that fulfilled my Bolton craving.

However, the ending was dissatisfying.
