I picked this one up because I needed something plot-driven to keep my attention while staying at home looking after my dog while she recovered from a traumatic visit to the dentist! Magpie delivers on that front, but only if you don’t think about it too much.
Considering how well I thought Day handles topics like motherhood and infertility, I was disappointed with her treatment of mental health issues. Not so into mental health problems being used as plot twists.

I’ve been looking forward to reading this for months, and as soon as it was published I had to get my hands on it. I was worried it wouldn’t live up to the hype or high expectations, but I am delighted to say it did!
This book has a very slow start, and during the first part of the book, I was debating whether to keep going or not. I’m glad I persevered as the book and plot went into full swing right at the end of part one and I was hooked from then on. It is so cleverly written as you’re left sitting on the edge of your seat wondering who’s telling the truth. I don’t want to reveal anything about the plot really as I don’t want to give the twist away, but it was a twist I didn’t see coming!
While being a psychological thriller, this book also delves into some very deep issues. Infertility is something that this book covers in detail, and I loved how Elizabeth Day wrote about it with empathy, tenderness, and compassion. It is something that I have never seen written about in detail in fiction, it may appear as a passing theme but never the main one. Day highlights the physical and mental toll that infertility can have on a woman and how the feelings of shame and failure are overwhelming. These passages are brutal, raw, and powerful.
