Not bad. I enjoyed the book, and it kept my attention. It wasn't quite as twisty and complex as I'd hoped, though. I pretty much figured it out early on. I also felt like the writer got bored about halfway through and then started repeating herself. I needed more tension and darkness, and I didn't really get that.

The Lake Superior setting caught my attention. I don't live right by Lake Superior, but it only takes a few hours to get there, so it feels kind of like home. I thought Webb did a great job of getting the character to a point where she would say yes to a deal like this and I really enjoyed reading more about Julia. The setting -- and the house -- were perfect for this story. I would definitely read more by Wendy Webb. I love that she sets her stories in big houses on Great Lakes.

This book started as a cozy 4 star ghost story mystery for people who also happen to like books about characters who like books, then torpedoed the last little bit in the ending. And then like a fish out of water in the epilogue, what was left flip-flopped around gasping for air and didn’t quite make it. This was an overall fun read - I finished the book in a day, couldn’t put it down, but the ending just didn’t do the rest of the book justice.

I can't count how many times the narrator's eyes start to sting with tears, how many times her stomach "seizes", and how many times she wants an explanation not to be revealed. What the heck?? Don't bother reading this book.

Not impressed. I actually quit reading this about 20 pages before the end, because I just didn't care about how it was going to end. The writing wasn't great and the story itself didn't flow very well. I love Gothic/psychological types of stories (like The Haunting of Hill House or Rebecca), and this didn't even come close. Very disappointing!
