This book took me years (not really) to get into. But about 6 months later and 400 pages in I could barely put it down. I loved the relationships in this book and the complex motives of the characters.
The book within a book was a hard to read at times because I'm not really a sci-fi kinda gal but I found those parts to not be too integral to the story. The book within a book was more important in what it meant to the characters and how it tied in to the real story-- not necessarily what was going on in the alien war on the far away planet. Ja feel?

The characters were so real and easy to relate to, the story unfortunately sounds so familiar that it left me in pieces. I just love Margaret Atwood.

Another masterpiece by Atwood. Every word she writes is solid gold. She doesn't hide from the reality. She faces it. It's incredibly refreshing.

A disappointment. I thought the plot was predictable and the characters were thinly drawn. I didn't enjoy the Blind Assassin parts of the narrative.

Another feminist masterpiece. This novel depicts women trapped by circumstances and society.

There is much to read, dig through, and think about in The Blind Assassin. But what particularly resonates is not its journey, but how it exists as an apparatus for us -- for acknowledging the mysteries that lie within and between experiences (especially over time and through the filter of personal focus and selfishness) and how we attribute fact, and craft stories, to bring meaning to our existence.

It is beautifully subtle postmodernism that doesn't strive to unhinge you, but rather wryly speak the truth, in all of its flaws (and sometimes lies).

It's the type of book that will change depending on your moment in life, much like the stories Atwood shares within.
