Before anything, I am a person who weighs over 400lbs (over 180kgs) and since moving countries as a small child, being mixed race in a new country, and be sexually and physically abused, have all contributed to my weight. I can very much relate to almost all that was written.
I applaud Roxane Gay for sharing her story, not only of rape and her obesity, but also of her journey to obesity. There needs to be more books and writings from people who have been obese for a prolonged amount of time. (I'm sick of reading about people's "journey" from normal bmi/healthy weight to obesity for less than a year while they make the "brave" struggle back to "understand" what/why obese people can't lose weight. These people are pure bulls**ers and don't realise that we become obese over time, a long time.)
Most of what was written was words of fluff. The first third of the book kept telling us what the book was about. The last handful of pages tell us as an older adult, she's doing much better even though she can never forgive or forget.
The first paragraph of chapter 88 can sum up the book.
I just wish there were more obese stories out there for us so we know we aren't alone in our silent suffering and constant struggles.
