Lizzie Snow moves from Boston into the far reaches of Maine and accepts a job as a deputy sheriff. It is definitely a small town and she has to learn how to cope with that after living in "the big city". She meets lots of the locals and gets caught up in their lives. The sheriff brought her there to help him solve some deaths of retired police personnel that were classified suicides or accidents and she is looking for her niece. She helps the sheriff while also solving some other crimes involving drugs and baby kidnapping. Her previous lover, Dylan, who now works for the Maine state police gets involved and shot several times.
She is trying not to be interested in him after he hurt her but it finding it difficult. She is also attracted to the local vet. Life is a bit complicated even in a small town. Along the way they she helps Dylan find the murderer of some girls in Bangor. A guy that had been helping her out around her office.
The author gives vivid descriptions of the area and how Lizzie feels about being in such a remote area. Combines several different stories into one mystery and adds a little romance into it also. Shows Lizzie has a tough side and a not so tough side.

I thought it might be an affectation for her other series. But it isn't.
