Maybe it’s because this is my first Babitz novel, but I absolutely adored this (and her!). I knew it would be a favorite once she compared the ocean to religion. Babitz put every mundane thing I love about my state so beautifully into words, down to the taquitos and lack of seasons (though I had to keep reminding myself that LA is no longer what it once was in the 2000s, let alone the 70s). It has only been a few hours since I've completed the book, but I already find myself craving more of her voice and vision of Southern California.

this is one of those books where i’m in the perfect age range and time period to thoroughly enjoy it; probably wouldn’t have if i wasn’t. but also, that WRITING. wow
