I normally love Robin Hobb, but this was super painful to get through. The first half (at least) was so boring I could hardly stand it, and I wanted to give up. But, because of my love for this author, I had already bought all three books in the series, so I figured I would push through.

There were a few interesting things that happened, and I will definitely keep on with reading the other two books, especially since I have them. But I probably won't be in any hurry. This is not her best writing, for sure.

I can't say enough good things about Robin Hobb. She combines the storyteller's gift with good, sometimes great writing. Her characters are so well wrought and the growth they gradually experience gets you completely caught up in their lives.

This book draws many parallels to the frontier U.S. but as always she makes the world all its own--squarely in the realm of fantasy. Young Nevare Burvelle is raised a Soldier's Son and attends the Academy never doubtful of his fate to serve the king on the frontiers against the savages, until an earlier dream quest he experienced on the plains and an eccentric cousin catch up with him. How Nevare battles his challenges, overcomes self-doubts, and makes decisions that are sometimes good and sometimes bad wrap you into the tale.

If you have never read any fantasy novels and are interested I would undoubtedly start with her, although Assassin's Apprentice would be a better book to start with.

Un libro muy calentito. Me gusta mucho cómo se construyen y se complementan los ambientes de la familia y la academia, que son prácticamente los dos únicos escenarios a través de los cuales se puede ver en el libro la política y la sociedad en su conjunto.

(2.5)..given benefit of the doubt as I generally like Hobb's novels.

It's very slow going.. I found a few chapters quite pointless. The main character is very annoying and naive, made it a bit difficult to keep going through the book. Tis only around page 400 that things start to speed up and get interesting. I suspect that the next book will be better.
