Well-researched and thought-provoking. I didn’t find the material to be dense, but might recommend reading in small doses by chapter or by part given its length and how much information there is to digest. Tons of interesting stuff! I admit to being skeptical about a few aspects, but honestly how could someone not have a few questions/criticisms in an 18hr psychology audiobook? For the most part though, I feel I walked away with a lot more knowledge. A book I’ll likely circle back to for reference.

Dr. Gabor Mate is the developer of the Compassionate Inquiry (CI) approach to therapy/psychology, which uses compassion and curiosity, rather than judgment or "diagnosis"  to help people identify the roots of their unhealthy patterns and get to know themselves in a new way. Although there are things in this book that will help you, I wouldn't call it a "self-help" book, as much as a guide for self-awareness.

I truly enjoyed the approach Dr. Mate takes to explain how and why we live in a truly toxic culture that is harming our bodyminds, and how we can take back some agency in our own healing. I especially appreciate that he takes care to differentiate healing from curing, affirming that anyone can live from a healed and healing place, regardless of their physical symptoms or diagnoses.

Note: I don't include content warnings in reviews, since everyone has different sensitivities. I encourage you to read the description to decide if this book is a good match for you.
