I had really high hopes for this book, and it fell a little short. Describing it as Beaches meets The Exorcist gave extremely high expectations that it just couldn’t quite meet. There wasn’t really any horror in it at all, and the story of the friendships felt surface level. Margaret was horrible to Abby and then all of a sudden they’re friends with no explanation. The thing that saved this book from being a 3 star and made it a 4 was the ending. It was perfect and even made me tear up a bit. I wish the rest of the book had been as deep and emotional as the ending.

I liked the cover, I liked the movie. The movie takes out the racist moments and a few storylines. Maybe they were say this is just how the 80s were? But there were a few lines that seemed like it didn't move the story and weren't needed after we established, "they're racist". They really wanted to drive that point home but it was backdrop and didn't have a real purpose to add to the story.
