This book was very good. I was hesitant about the duel perspective because I was worried I would end up caring about one over the other but I fully enjoyed both perspectives and found both characters very compelling. The writing was beautiful and the characters were compelling. The world was fascinating and I loved the magic system. The pacing was a little messy at the end but it still left me excited for the next book. The book was good but there was lots of room for improvement that I’m hoping we see in the next book.

I am officially back in my fantasy/magic phase
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was amazing. I found it really entertaining and I couldn’t put it away. It’s the right mix of funny, brutal, sad, epic and scary and it put me through a rollercoaster.
I have to say I found the end a bit messy/poorly paced so i took off 0.5 stars but I have high hopes the next book will be worth 5 !!

who started the rumor that this book is YA, this is definitely NA lol 🔥

“You think you know me,” and moved to join him. “But you’re wrong.”
“And you don’t know this war,” Simon countered. “You will, though, and soon. Consider this an introduction.”

i didn't really know what to expect going in, but i was immediately sucked in.

excellent worldbuilding, lore, and magic system. love the characters (simon is baeeee) and the alternating POVs was an effective way to keep me engaged (even if maybe a bit annoyed bc where the story was building up to at the point).

“Watch and learn, little Dread.”
“Call me ‘little’ again and I’ll punch you.”
A smile twitched at his mouth. “You know just how to entice me.”
“Have you forgotten? My punches hurt.”
“Forgotten? In fact, I relish the memory.”

rielle and eliana are two stabby girls, i love it 🗡️

Not her strongest work. I know what effect she's aiming for, but she achieved it much more deftly in Sawkill Girls and coming here directly off that one, the relative clumsiness here is jarring
