I got this book as an Amazon First Reads and was not very impressed honestly. The book was written as all emails which was very hard for my head to wrap around. The concept of the book was interesting but the writing made it hard for me to fully enjoy the plot.

The only aspect that was kind of enjoyable was the storytelling through written messages within the plot (emails, letters, etc). But it also made the protagonist one dimensional and experience an almost unrealistic and inadequate growth. The main character, Fawn, was unlikeable from the start and never redeemed herself or grew in a meaningful way. Even when we learn more about her life growing up, it’s difficult to sympathize because her actions in the present day are so frustrating and heinous.

When was the last time you read a book about a grumpy, frumpy middle-aged woman who is not actually a slyly sexy assassin but instead a failing business owner in a bad neighborhood of an unglamorous city, with few friends and an escalating water damage issue? And, also, the novel is written in the form of emails, classified ads, and other missives?

There are not many books like this one, for good reason. It's overly long and a little bit depressing. The narrator is unlikeable and unreliable, and the resolution is a little bit thin. The novel's cover misrepresents its contents. BUT it is funny, and thought-provoking, and compulsively readable. And so, so funny! I want it to be made into a movie set in London instead of Philadelphia and starring Emma Thompson as the main character, Fawn - and I think Fawn, who grudgingly accepts that in her mid-fifties she is slightly older than Keira Knightley, would approve of this.

DNF at 15%. Fawn is harsh and pompous. I just couldn't get past her to care about the story.

I really enjoyed this. I finished in one sitting. The email style is cute and gradually reveals more as the story goes on.

I noticed a lot of reviews found the character unlikeable. I can understand why someone would feel this way, but I still enjoyed the book and Fawn as a character. Certainly flawed, but also realistic in many ways and amusingly out of the box in others.

The ending was a little abrupt but things still tied together nicely.

I got this for free from Amazon First Reads and am glad I did! I would like to see what else the author has to offer.

Woah.. there was really not any redeeming quality about this book. I kept waiting for her to "see the light" and be a decent human. Spoiler alert: It didn't happen.

Interesting and different format. Not sure I would like it at first but ok reading. Not a huge fan of the main character, Fawn. Her excessive "exaggerations" made me dislike her at first then I started feeling so much pity for her when I realized why she was like that then at the end....well we won't ruin it with the end. I will let you read it.
I did have a few laugh out loud moments, some very sad moments too, so while it's an unusual format, you will still get sucked in and get a lot of feels from this book. Rated a 4 star

A very different approach to a novel

I enjoyed this book once I got used to the approach. I both loved and hated the main character but in the end began to understand her.
