Raymond is the only good man

on a serious note, it was nice to see someone get better.

I took one of my hands in the other, tried to imagine what it would feel like if it was another person’s hand holding mine. There have been times when I felt that I might die of loneliness. People sometimes say they might die of boredom, that they’re dying for a cup of tea, but for me, dying of loneliness is not hyperbole. When I feel like that, my head drops and my shoulders slump and I ache, I physically ache, for human contact—I truly feel that I might tumble to the ground and pass away if someone doesn’t hold me, touch me.

This book is fantastic. I wanted to pick it up about a year and a half ago, but it kept being unavailable in my library, and I forgot about it. Last month I saw it on the shelf and picked it up.
Honestly, I expected this to be 3,5, 4 stars maximum, and I had no idea what to expect.
I will not get into the spoilers, but this book kept me on my toes, the characters and their relationships kept me engaged and entertained, and I couldn't wait to pick up the book again.
This will definitely go on my cool-to-recommend pile :D

This book reminds me of this artwork by Jaako Pallasvuo - https://preview.redd.it/not-solitude-and-loneliness-by-jaakko-pallasvuo-v0-oxqc8u2obb1b1.jpg?width=1080&crop=smart&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=ffde693e984b8c129c0c64fe3e5b3616a9a75956

I think the author did a great job of portraying how crushing loneliness can be, and how small moments of connection and kindness can colour your whole life.

In places I felt as though Eleanor's dialogue switched jarringly from overly formal to quite natural sounding, but I think this might have been a deliberate artistic choice to create familiarity or add distance based on the scene, and it didn't overall take me out of the book. Enough details were dropped about the end mystery that you could piece it together, but rather than being frustrating that Eleanor wasn't catching up, you felt bad that she wasn't letting herself draw those conclusions.
Overall, well written, entertaining, full of longing.

Aside from the resolution, which felt a bit too simple, I loved this book. I almost put it down towards the beginning because Eleanor’s narrative style irritated me, but I appreciated her by the end and am glad I stuck with it.
