I enjoyed the set up to this series but this could’ve been a standalone as the entire story is neatly wrapped up by the end. I’m interested to see how the supporting characters are developed as this series progresses. The world-building is great and the allusions to Beauty and the Beast aren’t incredibly overt.

This book is ok. It's pretty standard YA fantasy.

The first of the ACOTAR books, this installment focuses on the background development of Feyre and her relationship with the High Lord Tamlin. After making a grave mistake while working to protect and provide for her cold-shouldered family, Feyre is faced with a choice to fight a losing battle or transition into the faerie world. The Spring Court seems to treat her well, although seeming to put her in an overprotective bubble. After a turn of events that leads Feyre to put her very human skills up against some of the strongest fae-made tests, she will soon learn though that mind games in the world of fae are very real, a much bigger war is being wagered, and not everyone is exactly who they seem.

This book was fine. It honestly felt pretty bland as far as the plot and characters went. The ending with Feyre under the mountain was pretty interesting though! I just had a hard time connecting to and rooting for Feyre, she isn’t the most likable character. We’ll see how I like the rest of the series.

Book really drags in the beginning to give too much world exposition before we even have the chance to care, surrounds main character by a family of near irredeemable characters that makes reader question why it spends so much time on them in the beginning, and repeats formulaic sequence of main character outright being stupid and putting self into harms way by doing the opposite of advice given, having to be rescued time and time again in drawn out false climaxes. That being said, the book redeems itself in the 3rd quarter, building on characters, creative action sequences, romance, and straight up gore and tragedy into resolution to make us feel something for an initially dull and annoyingly dumb main character.

Honestly, I am an enjoyer of fantasy and romance and smut. If you want to read a fantasy romance that’s good but doesn’t take itself too seriously this book is a great option, it has been so long since I felt so engulfed in a book that it played out like a movie in my head and I could barely remember the characters names because it was playing out like a movie. The world building isn’t the best, so if you really like world building, this one might not be it for you. There are definitely some cheesy moments and frustrating moments but since finishing this book and starting the next one, I do think I really enjoy this series. It makes me feel like I did when I was a teenager reading books like divergent or the maze Runner, just with some more spice. If you prefer audiobook The Reading Hag on YouTube does an amazing narration of it.

I like this book better than the first Throne of Glass book. The writing and the world-building is better in this one. However, I have mixed feelings about the relationship between Feyre and Tamlin. Some of their moments are sweet but other moments I found to be unhealthy. I don’t think I would put my life on the line for someone like Tamlin. Overall, a flawed but good read.
