A fun-loving, flirtatious and exciting romance, That Kind of Guy is a reminder not to judge books by their covers and to believe your own heart, rather than the heart people try to tell you that you have. I laughed out loud multiple times, and really just enjoyed myself reading this book.

Emmett had been taught by his best friend and his ex girlfriend that he was not capable of romantic love, and he believed them. Watching his feelings for Avery grow large enough for him to trust his own heart, rather than those beliefs, was beautiful and so so important.

I wish we’d gotten a bit more in depth with Avery and her relationship with both of her parents but, for a fairly short book, I understand why we got the high-level that we did. It would have been nice to have seen more of her life outside of or before the restaurant, like what inspired her to visit Queen’s Cove in the first place. I’m looking forward to reading up on the other Rhodes brothers now. Their family is joy personified.

Most of the plots in That Kind of Guy are fairly shallow in terms of how far we get into them, but I think that lends itself to providing us with a funny, lighthearted read that doesn’t take itself too seriously. You’re given enough, as the reader, to be invested in the main characters and that’s really all you need.

Genres: Adult Fiction, Contemporary, Romance
Tropes:
Enemies to Lovers, Fake Relationship, Forced Proximity, Hero - Bad Boy, Hero - Possessive, Marriage of Convenience, No 3rd Act Breakup

Pleasantly surprised by this one. The first 20% or so was a REAL slog, to the point where I was kind of worried this would end up being a DNF for me. But once the actual plot starts, the story really picks up.

I was pleasantly surprised to find the spice was very well written–everybody stays in character with lots of sexy banter. (I hate it when characters suddenly do a 180 during sex scenes and abruptly start acting or talking in a way they haven’t demonstrated before.)

My only complaint about this book is perhaps not a fair one, which is that it would benefit from an editor. The issue isn’t spelling and grammar as much the actual writing. The first 20% relies VERY heavily on telling the reader everything, with almost no showing.

Even the details that are supposed to carry some emotional weight like the heroine’s deadbeat dad (which of course impacts her willingness to jump into relationships) is described in a very matter-of-fact, almost distant way to the reader. This is a tricky line to walk for any writer, especially an indie one, but if Archer had been able to close that gap, this would have been a five-star read for me.

Safety Stats
Ages:
Both characters are adults in their 30s.
Cheating:
None
Other OM/OW:
None. The hero gets a little jealous/possessive at times, but neither dates anyone else, and any mention of past partners is kept vague..
Separation:
None. I would describe this as not having a 3rd act breakup.
Triggers:
Some mention of heroine's deadbeat dad who abandoned her as a child. Doesn't get too descriptive.
HEA/HFN?
HEA, married (for real) by the end. No mention of pregnancy or kids.

this was just not really good. like the premise of the fake relationship was already a little shaky for me - just to garner voters for him to become mayor???? bro- like wtf.
and then it just kept getting worse: first they're fake dating, then they're in a fake engagement, and THEN they're getting fake married?!?! WTF. like it just kept escalating and it was like all for what? like it was too much.
also the like emotional connection between them was nowhere to be seen - like emmett just wanted to f*ck her, that's it. and being in his POV really just made me not like him one bit.
ALSO- the whole "are you gay? because you've never made a move on me" - like what the actual f*ck. that made me hella uncomfortable, ngl.
and to be honest, i wasn't avery's biggest fan either. ughh, i didn't have a great time with this and contemplated DNFing several times, but alas i did finish it.

what did i like? the small town was pretty cool - not my favorite, but i've read worse for sure. i also liked his brothers & want to read their books - especially wyatt and hannah's book.

⚠️: abandonment, gaslighting, misogyny, vomit, chronic illness, homophobia, sexism, animal death

Wow, I don’t know why I held off on reading this book because it was so so good! I honestly had a hard time putting this book down. It was such a well balanced romcom- great banter and humor, sweetness, and spice! I loved Avery and Emmett they really were perfectly matched. I appreciated Avery’s independence and Emmett’s desire to take care of everyone. I couldn’t help but smile and laugh along with their antics and jokes with each other. I loved how their relationship evolved from fake dating into true feelings. The dual POV enhanced this by giving the full picture of the character’s perspective. Bonus points for no 3rd act breakup in this book. I absolutely recommend this book- perfect for fans of It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey or A Not So Meet Cute by Meghan Quinn. I am so excited to continue on with this series.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5
🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

“Let’s do a practise hug.”
“You can hug me in your mind.”

“Anywhere with you, Adams.”

🐢 First person dual POV
🐢 Enemies to lovers
🐢 Fake dating
🐢 Banter 🙌🏻
🐢 Well established secondary characters (for the next books!!)
🐢 MC growth; risking a relationship, past relationship trauma, parental abandonment, allowing someone to put you first 🥹
🐢 The kitchen bench 🥵
🐢 Epilogue
🐢 Hannah’s story is next 🙌🏻

Why it’s not 5⭐️:
We didn’t find out if Will’s family moved back, which was the entire point of Emmet running for mayor. There was also a missed opportunity for Avery to realise Emmet’s vows about first meeting her were true.

⚠️ Parental abandonment (past), divorce, financial hardship, life threatening illness (secondary character).
