It was very boring. The characters felt flat and emotionless. I had no attachment or investment in any of them. The main character is annoying and very unlike able. I don’t care about anything that happens to anybody in this book moving on now.

Cheesy

I had such high hopes for this book. It fell very flat for me. None of the characters were likable. They all seemed so bland. None of them had any soul. I kept waiting for the book to get better. There were moments where the story picked up, but then it dropped off again. There was so much unnecessary angst. Mia and her sister were so whiny and dramatic. It took forever to get to the meet-cute scenario that I wanted. By then the book was practically over. This was a big disappointment for me.

I had been waiting so long to read this book and it makes me sad that I didn't like it. I fully read 5 or 6 chapters, then I skimmed through the whole book, only reading about the meet ups and the parts with Gavin.
Which not only was it obvious from the second he was introduced that they were going to end up together, but she suddenly started liking him from one moment to the other. Plus he wasn't THAT present throughout the book and they get together in literally the last 2 pages of the book

The idea of the meet cute project was good, the execution by Mia's friends wasn't. Also, even though Mia was 100% aware of the plan, and how it was supposed to work, she was so painfully oblivious. Every time one of her friends suddenly wanted her to be dressed nicely, standing in a certain place at a certain time to very clearly set her up, she would get surprised when a boy showed up as if it wasn't the most obvious outcome.

I didn't really care about her friends (especially when they had that dumb fight where they got mad that Mia went on her own to find a date and put herself in a dangerous situation, even though they left Mia alone at the party and didn't answer her calls or texts) and I also didn't like her family, couldn't really stand them. I wouldn't say that Sam being nice for the last 2 or 3 chapters, while being a pain in the ass 3/4 of the book, was a character development either. And I'm pissed that all the book was based around Sam getting married, and the wedding this, and the wedding that BUT IN THE END WE DON'T GET TO SEE IT.

"[I] think about how friendship is such an important foundation to love."

Black mc

Lighthearted YA supposedly romcom story because people of colour deserve that too!

Similar to The Jasmine Project in that people close to the mc pick some boys and organise some meet-cutes for her. Unlike TJP, Mia is aware, just not debriefed on the plan until it happens. The boys, however, are not. It gets messy very quickly, and not just on the meet-cute front.

Actually, even though the book is called The Meet-Cute Project, it doesn't have a lot of those. It does have a lot of arguing. Yay? This is why I called it a "supposedly romcom" because I personally didn't find much comedy in it. It was more on the stressful side with some cute-ish moments.

The characters aren't that memorable for the most part, and they would definitely have benefited from some more physical descriptors and psychological traits or bios. Mia's soon to be married sister, Sam, is a whole can of worms that I cannot stand. She goes way beyond bridezilla behaviour! (btw why would you want some random teen on your weddings photos? With your close family?)

Mia has the cutest friendship with this elder man named Harold. He is committed to his daily early morning swimming just like Mia, who's part of the swim team. He is very supportive of her efforts and helps her improve by taking notes of her form and times. He actually has a very successful meet-cute!! Hahaha!

Gavin might be one of the most reasonable characters in the whole story, and I do like him! He seems to genuinely like gardening, and he's quite a handyman! I'm impressed. But I'm disappointed we'll never know why he was grounded. Or better yet the reason behind which he did what led to him getting grounded.

There is self-discovery and personal growth for Mia, and a brighter future ahead.
