- Annoying, whiny, immature main character.
- Plot is aggravatingly over-reliant on coincidence.
- Unnecessary violence against dogs.
- Flat, stereotyped characters.
- Overuse of ineffective hyperbole and bland simile.
- Inconsistent character actions.
- Misleading title.

Very sad. I wasn't expecting the ending, but im glad it ended that way rather then what i was afraid it was gonna happen. Jack is the coolest dog ever, and sometimes reminds me of my dog, though my dog does NOTHING right, but i love him all the same.

begin: i keep running into books where the male character is SO MAD at the world! is this what angry young men really feel? why isnt this being addressed by more people? that level of anger only leads to angry adults, and they pass it on to others, including the next generation. anyway, it's got a dog and a loner boy, so you know the dog's going to be dead at the end of the book. what was i thinking?!
end: it ended as i expected and yet not. touching, poignant but could have gone deeper. still, overall a good dead dog book.

A poor man’s [b:Where the Red Fern Grows|10365|Where the Red Fern Grows|Wilson Rawls|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1518702249s/10365.jpg|115]. Young Logan has a father that abandoned him, a stepfather who thinks he can’t do anything right, and a mother that never seems to be on his side. Logan’s stepdad wants him to be more like the neighbor’s kid so they decide to get him a dog, but not just any dog it has to be a purebred chocolate lab named Jack. Somehow Logan convinces his mom to take him to a shelter where he picks out the ugliest, meanest, mutt on the premises. Now the two of them are on the run from Logan’s family, from the disease that’s killing all the dogs and from the roving gangs of vigilantes.
I wasn’t really impressed. The concept was interesting but I think the implementation could have been better.
