I read The Carnelian Phoenix in one day, drawn along by a pacy and exciting plot, some excellent scene-setting in my favourite city Rome and engaging characters. Minor characters are noticeably given full weight by the author, leaving the reader with a sense of rich variety and depth. Watch out for a lady called Fulvia, and that is all I shall say …
The plot takes us from Britannia to Rome and back and the author’s knowledge and love for her settings is clear. I have read many books set in Roman Britain but I don’t think any other authors draw a Romano-British landscape as vividly as this.
