Loved it.

I didn’t give it five stars because of the .. what I felt was abrupt ending.

Also, can’t these books have a regular ending anymore?!?!?? Why must the ending be ... deep

4.5 stars. This book really carried me with its beautiful writing and portrait of intra- and inter-family relationships changing over time. The structure of the book was somewhat unconventional and you'll find that the school integration storyline is not told in the clear-cut, dramatic way you might have been expecting, but I liked that and found it more realistic. It was refreshing not to have an overly simplified narrative designed to make the reader feel better about racial inequality.

(Would be 5 stars except there were just way too many points of view - the book would have been strengthened by focusing in more on a few characters.)

I received a copy of this book as a gift.
"What's Mine and Yours" follows multiple points of view of different families grappling with racist decisions that greatly impact their individual lives. Gee's mother wants her son to have the best in his life, and that means attending the best school now that they have opened it up to black students. Noelle's mother will not acknowledge that Noelle is half Latina, and instead only sees her daughter as white. Noelle and Gee end up working together on a school play, and their worlds quickly become linked in ways neither expected.
I was excited to read this story because I do enjoy reading about the human struggle, but this book just did not click for me. I was never invested in the characters' stories, and I did not care what was going on. I think I was immediately drawn into one character from the beginning, but he is killed almost immediately, and I was very unhappy with this turn of events. Because of this, I did not want to connect to the rest of the story.
I think this book has its audience, unfortunately, that audience is not me.

I loved the writing style and character development. It might have been a little slow plot-wise? I kept waiting for something to happen, but it was sort of a slow burn.

Overall I enjoyed the story, but it definitely wouldn’t be in my top anything. Had a meaningful and deep message with decent characters. My biggest issue was the ending. I felt it was rushed and the author didn’t know how to finish so she just stopped writing.

This isn’t the kind of book you devour in one sitting. It’s one you read slowly and digest.

What’s Yours and Mine follows two families, the Venturas and Gilberts. The two families are deeply connect but neither seem to be aware of their tragically linked past.

The story bounces between 2002 and present day and covers hard topics, but I felt it barely scratched the surface of some of those issues. There were few consequences for those who were in the wrong.

If you love books with a few characters that are super easy to hate, you’ll enjoy hating a few folks in this one.
