Mary Poppins, by P.L. Travers

I was obsessed with the movie when I was a kid, and I regret waiting so long to finally read this. Not only are the book's plot and tone vastly different from the movie's, but the book's character of Mary Poppins is much more multi-faceted. The entire story is one magical adventure after another, and when Mary Poppins (spoiler alert!) leaves the Banks family at the end, it's as sad as waking up from the most wonderful dream.

So Sweet! It was wonderful to visit a place I had only known from the Disney adaptations. However, why was I expecting Mary Poppins to be a nice, kind, and sweet character... that was the only thing that was a little jarring.. she needed a spoonful of sugar! It's been a long time since I've seen the movie, but I don't remember her being as stuck up as Travers wrote her.. time for another rewatch. However, I want to think that Disney sweetened the character up a lot!

This is a great read, especially for children and big kids, like me.

Firstly, if you haven't seen the film, go and watch it. It is fantastic. It always reminds me of Christmas so I tend to watch it around this time of year. Julie Andrews is just perfect in it.

Secondly, if you have already watched the film and think that this is going to be exactly the same, you would be wrong. In fact, it may surprise you, as this is totally different to the film. There are the odd few characters and scenes but apart from that it is like chalk and cheese and yet just as enjoyable. I do, personally, still prefer the film but don't let that dissuade you from reading the book.

And thirdly, there isn't just one book based on Mary Poppins. Oh no, there are, in fact, six, so if you enjoy the first then do what I am going to do (eventually) and read the others. I'm convinced that they will be just as good as the original. I'll keep you posted.

I listened to this in the car with my 6 year old over the course of a couple weeks. It was almost 4 hours long and we had no long drives, but we both enjoyed it immensely.

We've both seen the movie; myself countless times. This was our first reading of the book.

The character of Mary Poppins is truly magical, both on the screen and in print. There are even more delightful quirky characters in the book than the movie. Do yourself a favor and read the book as well.
