I actually loved this book! Suggestion... in the back of the book are a bunch of songs that are mentioned throughout the book or recommended based on what may be playing in a club like “Start.” Listen to them while you read. Makes the book that much cooler.

I think this book should be read by everyone. It's so freakin real.

This book was chosen for the Intermediate Sequoyah list 2016. While the book itself is Ok and the plot predictable, it has a good message for teens dealing with wanting to be liked, popularity, etc. However, there is enough sexual content that I do not feel it is appropriate for the intermediate level, especially the younger grades.

I really enjoyed this one. Entertaining and fast paced, with a really beautiful message within its pages.

I absolutely fucking adored this book. I've finally rated a book after months; I don't do that anymore coz I don't stick to my opinions but this book just kept me engaged very emotionally. I didn't expect this from Leila after reading "tonight the streets are ours", I went into this book thinking I'll give this author another chance because there were some things likable about ttsao and thank fuck I did read it.

I did not expect to like this as much as I did. Also listening to the songs mentioned throughout made reading it even better.

I DEVOURED this book. It was amazing. The synopsis definitely does not do it justice - it was incredibly complex and deep and emotional while also staying true to its YA teen genre. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves contemporary YAs, and any of my fellow fans of All The Bright Places or My Heart And Other Black Holes, because it definitely resembles those books.

I finished this book a few days ago but it has taken me a little bit of time to think about what I have read. I think overall I would give this 3.5 stars if I had the option. I really really enjoyed Leila Sales' writing style - I thought it was easy to pick up and realistic, which was surprising to me as I am usually not one for first-person narrative. I also LOVED the way depression and mental illness was portrayed - how isolating it can be and how paranoid it makes you feel, even assuming people who are trying to help are only doing it for their personal gain.

However, a major disappointment for me was the fact that there is the normalisation of an adult dating a minor. There is no reason for a 19-year-old ("almost 20!" as we are told multiple times, as if that doesn't make it worse) to be interested in the 16-year-old lead. It is even mentioned that it would be inappropriate for them to be together due to the age difference, and the love interest repeats the fact that he thinks she is so young. Yet there is NO CONVERSATION about how this is toxic and isn't ok! Nobody seems to care! While we do see that the love interest is, in general, a pretty shitty person, the underage relationship was so off-putting that I considered not even finishing the book at some stages. Imagine how that would come off to younger, impressionable readers!!

While I was disappointed with some of the themes in this book, I think I would like to try some of Sales' other works to see if I continue to enjoy her writing style.

I am so glad the romance did not blow this book up. I thought char was a bit too much and I'm glad the book didn't end with a romantic happily ever after.
