4.5 ⭐️ it took me so long to read this but, I loved it. I loved the feeling of it. It’s a book that felt so tangible and so real, and the characters, while they weren’t all relatable, they were understandable and they’re people you know. The journey Queenie takes from where she starts to where the book ends is fulfilling and honest. It was incredibly written and I recommend it for any casual reader

slice of life sadness

I liked this book. It’s sad in a sense. I think I identify too much with the falling apart Queenie experiences. It was not really a fun read, but I enjoyed the piecing back together and the not quite put together ending.

Queenie took me by surprise. I loved the focus on complicated mental health and changing habits. I felt for Queenie every step of the way. I cheered and rooted for her and ultimately was so proud of her achievements.

Queenie and her long-term boyfriend Tom are the interracial Ross and Rachel. The book opens with the two as they have decided to take a "break." Queenie is now trying to navigate her life, health and interpersonal relationships. Queenie makes questionable decisions throughout the novel, ending up in tense situations.

Again, I didn't reasonably expect this book to be as dark as it turned out to be; it gave me all the feelings. There are many times in this book that I wanted to reach through the pages and slap some of the characters (men) that Queenie has to deal with in her life. Between Tom, Ted, Guy, and Cassandra, I have never wanted to throw a book against a wall more.

Queenie is a strong, intelligent, and independent yet flawed character. While, at times, this book is devastating, it is genuinely relatable. In addition to Queenie, I am impressed with the creation of the minor characters; they felt like whole people and not one-dimensional "token" characters.

Happy to give this book my first five stars of 2023!

Really well written, covers a time of major transition for Queenie and provides insight into her character development and experience as a fat black woman navigating mental health issues and big changes in her life. Highly recommend.
