The best sections are the ones that take place in jail - Elizabeth is the most interesting character to me and the most interesting character relationship is between her and Jenny.

Heartbreaking, this book. With the dementia plots, and the sacrifice, and the heartache from the different characters... I was in tears at the end of the book, and in the middle. The way it is crafted, though, is quite beautiful, quite stunning. The time and perspectives moves around to give you just enough of a full picture, while still leaving things in secret, for your imagination only.

Highly recommended, this book.

“How quickly someone else's life can enter through the cracks we don't know are there until this foreign thing is inside of us.” - Idaho.

One hot August day a family drives to a mountain clearing to collect birch wood. Jenny, the mother, is in charge of lopping any small limbs off the logs with a hatchet. Wade, the father, does the stacking. The two daughters, June and May, aged nine and six, drink lemonade, swat away horseflies, bicker, and sing snatches of songs as they while away the time. But then something unimaginably shocking happens, an act so extreme it will scatter the family in every different direction.

Hello again! Apologies for being a tad MIA. I was on vacation in beautiful Hawaii until last week and then just had so much to catch up on at home! I actually finished this book before vacation, and sadly it just wasn’t for me. I had a hard time connecting to the characters and overall the plot just didn’t do it for me. I still had so many questions at the end, and felt that it was a little bit lacking. However, I did enjoy the fact that it took place in Idaho. Growing up in Eastern Washington, I am quite familiar with Idaho, and some of the areas mentioned in this book. Love reading books where I am familiar of the setting. For now, I am looking forward to getting back into my Bookstagram routine though, and ready for some summer reading!

This book was really interesting. It took many different perspectives that I never knew what was going to happen in that year. As I kept reading, I couldn't help but hope that June would show up or be found. This book had an enchanting way with words that left me really grateful for this book.

Honestly - what was the point? I have become quite tired of authors writing books with intentionally obtuse clues and non-endings. It's like every book has become "Lost" without the end reveal. I don't know - this one was a waste of time.
