oh man, prepare your heart before you read this book, it is full of so much sadness yet so much hope. this book reminded me why I shouldn't want to read great books like this all of the time, because then I would be a wreck and wouldn't be able to function. I've been crying all day for 3 days now and will probably cry more tomorrow.
the beginning started quite slow with a lot of backstory right in the beginning, so it was hard for me to get into and I did not like it. but as Victoria and Wil began falling in love, I got hooked and finished the book very quickly. this may be a boring or slow book for you unless you are able to feel into Victoria's story and connect with her. I sure did.
this book is full of beatiful nature prose and sentences that leap off of the page and ask to be underlined and memorized. it is similar to Where the Crawdads Sing and The Great Alone in the way the environment is a character in itself. the love story in this book is similar to Jack & Rose and Patroclus & Achilles.
I only wish that the very last scene went on a bit longer at the end, or that the book was a few chapters longer, for we wait half of the book for that scene to happen and then it just ends which was disappointing.
this is one of my all time favorite books and it is one that has impacted me deeply at this moment in my life.

This was very depressing, slow and a bit boring. This poor woman. Haunted by the death of her teenage boyfriend of two weeks and the baby of his she had to give up. while she is resilient she is also lonely and sad. I love that she was not racist and was loving instead, but she also just seemed stuck for most of the book.
