Volume Two takes the world and characters of Beyond The Western Deep to an entirely new level. The character depth and interactions feels real- it's a breath of fresh air to see characters in a fantasy story that are well-rounded and defined beyond the stereotypical Everyman main character, or the comic relief best friend, or the wise mentor. Quinlan, Dakkan, and Kenosh defy these tropes just as much as they seem to fill their standard roles, and the world they inhabit holds a lot of depth and weight. The art is simply exquisite- especially when you remember that Rachel Bennett had to turn out a page a week for the online version. Her artwork is detailed, colorful and every readthrough gives me a new detail I had missed the first time through. Alex Kain's writing is exceptional, as well- not only does he know how to structure the plotline, he also has to keep the dialogue realistic but balanced as it takes up precious visual space.

In short, Beyond the Western Deep is an expertly told tale and well worth the read.
