"Homecoming" by Robin Hobb
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is a prequel to the Rain Wilds and its people. It tells the tale of how the first settlers ventured into the Rain Wilds. It explains how they came to be there, and why they settled and built homes in such an inhospitable place. Chronologically, it is the very first story that takes place in the realm of the Elderlings. A good read if you read the Rain Wilds Chronicles.
"The Word of Unbinding" by Ursula K. Le Guin
⭐⭐. A really short story about a trapped magician who is trying to escape. .
"The Burning Man" by Tad Williams
⭐⭐ A story about a "question" hounding the "king".
"As the Wheel Turns" by Aliette de Bodard
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Choose. Die. Repeat. A story about choices and reincarnation.
"The Alchemist" by Paolo Bacigalupi
⭐⭐⭐ Read this a few years back and that was my rating! Did not read it this time. I don't remember what it is about.
"Sandmagic" by Orson Scott Card
⭐⭐⭐ A Story about a boy who wants to learn magic to seek revenge.
"The Road to Levinshir" by Patrick Rothfuss
⭐⭐⭐ Kvothe is too good to be true but I still enjoyed the story.
"Rysn" by Brandon Sanderson
⭐⭐⭐ Bargaining with the Shin.
"While the Gods Laugh" by Michael Moorcock
⭐⭐
Second Reading
"Mother of All Russiya" by Melanie Rawn
⭐⭐⭐⭐A story about Saint Olga of Kiev.
"Riding the Shore of the River of Death" by Kate Elliott
⭐⭐⭐
"The Bound Man" by Mary Robinette Kowal
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Love this one!
"The Narcomancer" by N. K. Jemisin
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “The Narcomancer” is set in the world of the Dreaming Moon–a secondary world blatantly modeled on our own, although this world’s cosmology is heavily influenced by the presence of an enormous, brightly-colored “moon” (really a gas giant) in the sky. The story focuses on the land of Gujaareh, a nation that resembles ancient Egypt in many ways. In Gujaareh, peace is the only law–and anything which disrupts peace (e.g., violence, pain, selfishness, disorderly behavior) is viewed as a sickness that must be healed. There’s a special cadre of priests who deal with every disruption to the peace… sometimes by killing the person causing it.
Cet is one of these priests. When he learns of an unusual band of brigands threatening a small isolated village, he travels there and puts everything–his soul, his body, his sanity–on the line to reestablish the Goddess’ peace.
"Strife Lingers in Memory" by Carrie Vaughn
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.
"The Mad Apprentice" by Trudi Canavan
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“The Mad Apprentice” is the true telling of a disaster that led to the Guild banning higher magic–or “black magic” as it came to be known. As happens so often with historical events, details were forgotten or misremembered, witnesses killed and records lost or deliberately destroyed. In the sequel to the Black Magician Trilogy, The Ambassador’s Mission, one of the magicians attempts to sort out truth from the mistakes and lies but is only partially successful. Only the reader, though this story, will know the full truth
"Otherling" by Juliet Marillier
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Otherling” is set in a chilly Nordic realm where the people are dependent on the weather and the seasons for survival. Their bard has the task of passing on the ancient Songs each season in order to help the people make good choices about their co-existence with nature–whether it’s safe to fish, how large a catch to take, when to go hunting, what to set away in store and so on. However, the choice of a new bard comes at a shockingly high price, and when that choice is not made correctly, dark days can ensue for the whole community.
"The Mystery Knight" by George R. R. Martin
⭐⭐⭐
The Mystery Knight is a novella published in 2010 as part of the Warriors anthology, edited by George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois. It is the third in the series of "Dunk and Egg" stories. Previous stories are The Hedge Knight and The Sworn Sword.
