The Exorcist was one of the first horror movies that I watched. I remember that it was not so terrifying to me at the time but hilarious as I couldn't help myself by giggle at Regan's screams of anguish. However, the book literally changed the way I viewed the story of the exorcist. I appreciated how it was written but also how close to the book the movie is.

I am not a believer in the paranormal or the occult, even though I am always interested in what people have to say or how mental health illness was interpreted as possession. I liked how the author did a great job in presenting both sides of mental illness. When the doctors seem to have an explanation for every single symptom but yet the tests show nothing abnormal. It can be baffling but of course, there are more tests to do, but when everything fails, religion comes in.

The descriptions were brief but on point and every single thing mentioned seems to add to the story but also to the overall supsense. I liked how small hints of what was to come could be found everywhere in the book, even from the first page. Once the reader connects the dots, it makes for a very terrifying reading experience.

The book is old, therefore a bit outdated when it comes to what people knew then about mental health but also about Satanism. It is clear that the author did his research and handled both topics great, however, he side of the Satanism seems ridiculous and rightfully so, as at the time people didn't know a lot about Satanism and people were terrified of it.

I wouldnt say that this is the scariest novel of all time but it is definitely creepy and I can see how people with strong belief in the paranormal, religion and the occult can be affected. At the time, as my parents had told me, the movie and the book was controversial and terrifying.

If you are a fan of horror, this is a must read and I do recommend watching the movie after you read it as it really adds to the experience.

Personally found the adjective choices irritating and the descriptions of the main character distinctly male gaze-y in a way I don't enjoy. Basically just not a writing style I like.

I wasn't sure what to give this one.
It had some really good unnerving, creepy moments and some that were utterly gross for lack of a better term!
However it just felt unnecessarily long.
Weird backgrounds and subplots took up space where I think exploring the subtle changes to add to the build up needed more space to happen.
Still glad I read it though :)

3.5/5 stars rounded up on rating apps.

I’ve never seen this movie, so the book it was based on was my first intro to The Exorcist. Based on a quick IMDB scroll, the book and movie are fairly true to each other with the book being more graphic.

In this, Regan, a 12 year old in Washington, slowly has a change in behavior, form minor changes until it seems like she’s both mentally and physically a different, horrible person. Psychologists and doctors can’t tell what’s wrong, so in desperation her mother turns to Jesuit’s and an exorcism.

I thought the first 1/5 was slow, but then it picked up and was fairly terrifying. Relied heavily on shock for its horror. So many TW, it’s pretty graphic violence and language. Glad I read it though

Haunting in all the right places

Just like the movie, the book is phenomenal. The book explains a few things the movie didn't but book fleshes out the characters even more.
