Hartung does a good job of creating distinctive characters, and I thought this novel was a quick, interesting read (3-4 hours?). I didn't feel particularly compelled by the plot, which I felt was a bit rushed and over-manipulated at times, but as far as thrillers go, this one is solidly suited for casual reading.

This is an utterly daft book that reminded me of a bad Person of Interest episode set in Munich.

Nik Pohl is a faded/jaded cop (with his own moral compass). He gets blackmailed into investigating a women's disappearance, at which point all hell breaks loose, and we get corrupt cops, prostitutes, crazy rich IT experts with dubious motives, iffy pathologists (on both sides), bribes left and right, crazy doctors, and alcohol addiction centres that are like none you've ever seen.

The writer means well, it's just way way to busy, and has a baddie that is so far beyond unbelievable that you'll be unable to fathom how anyone thought it was okay.

Broken Glass was interesting and kept me entertained, but a lot of it felt predictable and cliche. Nik has some serious issues, and it results in him starting the story as a lackluster detective. He's not corrupt, but he does things his way, and I feel like this is typical in detective novels. He eventually gets more interesting as he gets more into the cases. There are quite a few disappearances and crimes that overlap. Some of them were interesting, some of them weren't. About the only unexpected aspect was his talks with his sister.

The book was ok. I'm not eagerly rushing out to read the second, but if it came up in my suggestions on Kindle, I probably wouldn't turn it down.

A pretty decent mystery thriller. It was October's first reads book choice on Amazon and I'm pleased I picked it. There was enough mystery to keep me guessing and wanting to read more. It was a good enjoyable read and one I would recommend to anyone wanting to chill out with a good book.

Good whodunit

Interesting set up. The book gets going right away. Because it’s translated from the German there are some fun references to Europe. I read this cover to cover I record time.

I found this pretty gripping. I think at first I found the main character a bit of a cliche of a typical crime detective. I like how the relationship between Nik and Jon developed through the story. I think most of the translation was absolutely fine, but there was one bit near the end with a pseudonym that seemed to be an anagram in German but wasn’t an anagram in English.

“Female police officer from the other team had hair exactly the same color and length as the strands currently sticking to his coat. She was the kind of woman who’d be bold enough to start a relationship with a superior thirty years her senior”

Miss me with this absolute misogynistic bullsh$t!!!! There is so much wrong with this I don’t even know where to start.
She is bold and has the audacity to have blond hair so let’s slap a scarlet letter on her?!!
DNF on page 15.
Nope we aren’t putting up this crap in 2023. NEXT!
