Book Review - Choosers of the Slain by James Cobb

This is the 1st book in the Amanda Garrett series by James Cobb.

Amanda Garrett is a fantastic 21st century heroine for a difficult world.

In Choosers of the Slain, Commander Amanda Garrett and her ship, the USS Cunningham DDG-79 are deployed to blockade the Antarctic Peninsula from a marauding Argentina who are trying to take over the entire peninsula
before the Antarctic winter sets in.

Now the USS Cunningham is no ordinary ship, she is the world's first stealth guided missile destroyer (DDG).
Designed for independent operations, the Cunningham does not require the support of an aircraft carrier battlegroup and can perform combat operations on her own. This
ship is capable of anti-aircraft strike, antiship strikes, land attack, anti submarine warfare (both on her own and in conjunction with her helicopters) as well as anti-satellite warfare (using a naval based ASAT - anti-satellite missile).

Not only does this book contain a fantastic amount of naval combat, but it also contains diplomacy and the human element (learning about the crew of the Cunningham and watching them to learn to work together).

This series of books has long been one of my favourites and I recommend it for anyone who likes strong female heroines and naval combat.
