I didn't like this book nearly as much as the original Gossip Girl series, nor as much as the "It Girl" spin off, but I liked it well enough. I'm interested to see where the series goes and if there's any of the old GG characters making an appearance.

This was pretty similar to the main Gossip Girl series- all scandal and rich kid drama, but I think I was slightly more into it because these are new characters, whereas I already had expectations about the GG characters from watching the show first.

I used to be obsessed with the gossip girl series and the it girl series and also the carlyles spin off! I'm going to devour this and feel 14 again!

This spin-off was not as good as the It-Girl, I expected it to be just as fun and nice as Gisspi Girl and It-Girl ~maybe even nicer~ but it wasn't. The story of 1 of the carlyle sisters was quite boring (I don't know the names anymore, I read them a long time ago, but I mean the hippie-Carlyle sister ;) ) jup this book series was quite a let-down :(

This is the first book in the continuation of the Gossip Girl series. The original characters are all gone and this book - The Carlyles - focuses on completely different rich kids living in Manhattan and going to the same schools as before. I thought it was ok. The characters were in the same vein as the previous book. The plots are starting to stretch a little thing but since this is a guilty pleasure for me, much like reading US Magazine, I am glad to see the series continue.

My favourite line was definitely 'Gwendolyn was saccharinely sweet'. I enjoy the reference to an increase in questioning heteronomativity and the male gaze in a review for a later book in the series, as this one had included exchange:

Dear GG, / So, my girlfriend says she's an academic lesbian, and she makes me wear shirts that say things like 'my goal in life is to kick the patriarchy's ass'. It makes me uncomfortable. What should I do? / - Emo Boy
Dear EB, / If you're into her, I say, wear 'em with pride, even though personally, I think all T-shirts with slogans should be outlawed. And maybe you should start picking out a few T-shirts for her to wear. I like 'my goal in life is to emasculate my boyfriend'. It has a certain ring to it, doesn't it? / - GG

The occasional commentary by Gossip Girl in the narrative of the story was entirely awful. Additionally, Owen and Rhys are fairly obviously gay for each other. 'Good thing he's got a new friend with broad shoulders to cry on'? Really? This would have had five stars if there appeared to be any chance of them realising it. Instead, there was a thankful but sudden end to a book with only the blandest of appeal.
