I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.
Deception is the 2nd book in the Dark Matter series by Teri Terry. I was given the opportunity to review the 1st book, Contagion, and thoroughly enjoyed it. When offered the 2nd book, I jumped at the chance.
Deception starts where Contagion ends. Shay, believing she is the carrier of the epidemic, surrenders to the army. Kai is heartbroken and feels betrayed because Shay left. After discovering survivors like Shay are not carriers, he is desperate to find her.
I enjoyed the 1st book more than the 2nd. Because it is a YA book, there is the obligatory love triangle. Still, it is worth reading. We are introduced to other groups. They are survivors, those hunting the survivors, and those behind the epidemic. One of the people we learn more about is Dr. Alex Cross, Kai's hated stepfather and Callie's father.
The 3rd and final book in the trilogy, Evolution, is available for pre-order. Its release date is August 11, 2020. I am looking forward to seeing how the trilogy ends. Will Kai and Shay end up together? What will happen to Callie? Will she get her revenge?

If you like fast-paced stories then this is probably going to be right up your street. Having set up our characters in 'Contagion,' Terry is free to let them loose on their quest to discover just what/who is behind the spread of the disease.
Having grown accustomed to their voices I really enjoyed the fact that we are continually shifting viewpoints here. Watching Shay as she comes to realise the truth behind her situation was tough. We got to see a little more of Kai, although he is rather bullish in approach and makes some bad decisions that I hope he'll get to move on from in the final part of the trilogy. Oddly, I also developed a soft spot for Callie. Even though we can see the extent to which she is responsible for events pretty early on (and it was heavily hinted at last time) this didn't ruin things because of a rather cunning little twist that is dropped on us late on. Without giving anything away, this definitely sets up something pretty exciting for next time.
As we follow Kai, Shay and Callie around the country the net closes in on the mysterious Dr 1. We get an awful lot more insight into the SAR division and some truly exciting details about what the survivors are capable of doing. The survivors were a group that I thought would feature more heavily. They were definitely needed to help Shay move towards her finishing place for this book, but I really hope that we'll get to see a little more of them and their unique talents next time.
My final thoughts on this inevitably focus on the evil genius ending...I was shouting at Freya. While I understand why she did what she did, I really hope it comes back to haunt her later on. Shay comes into her own at the end, and I can't wait to see if we get some of our questions answered.
Thank you NetGalley and Hachette for brightening up my morning commute with this page-turner.

Love the different perspectives. So many different twists, it's actually so good. Definitely recommend. I think it's better than the first book. Can't wait to read the final book!

This book was a rollercoaster, especially at the end! My first five-star read!
What I Liked About The Book
Practically everything! The plot was so engaging and addictive to carry on reading until I finished. I read most of it all today! A factor I appreciate with the series so far is that I'm actually learning about science in addition to the characters and plot simultaneously. I adored most of the new characters and was saddened when one thing happened to my favourite one. Although I did predict most plot twists halfway through the first book, Contagion, some plot twists shocked me to the point where my jaw dropped every time. I was constantly trying to think of what could happen next because of how engaging the book was! Utterly amazing!!!
What I Didn't Like About The Book
Everything was perfect, and the only thing that points out is some of the characters are very dislikable, but that adds to the story, so technically, it isn't something to degrade the book in any way. It proves that the book is so good since I felt pure hatred for a few moments and the decisions that they were involved with them.
In Conclusion
The best book I have read so far, and I am so excited to read the third and final book of the series to see how it ends!!!
Graphic: Confinement and Death
Moderate: Cancer, Child death, Chronic illness, Drug use, Gun violence, Terminal illness, Violence, Forced institutionalization, Blood, Medical content, Grief, Murder, Fire/Fire injury, and Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Panic attacks/disorders, Suicide, Vomit, Police brutality, and Alcohol

Second book in the trilogy is again fairly average, with lots of really short chapters and different voices which sound very similar and often can't be separated. OK but just OK.
