This is book 5 in a series of standalones following members of the Wilde family. I recommend reading the series in order, and I've enjoyed all books in the series so far.

This was mostly an enjoyable read, and it went by quickly, but there were some issues with pacing and some bits that felt uninteresting. The conflict in the last ~35% of the book seemed kinda forced, and at times it felt more like a book about a different couple who get a lot of page space.

šŸŒ¶ļø 4/5 there were a bunch of steamy scenes

šŸ³ļøā€šŸŒˆāœŠ No real diversity to speak of.

Eloisa James returns with another Wilde romance! This might be the best one yet, but competition for that title is fierce. Viola, the product of her mother's first marriage, has never truly seen herself as a Wilde. She doesn't match the rest of the Duke's children in looks or temperament. All she wants is a quiet life in the country where she never has to attend another ball. To that end, she has decided to fall in love with her family's newly hired vicar. The Duke of Wynter, has decided to finally get married and would also like someone who desires a quiet life. What he doesn't want, is someone who is currently in love with a vicar, so he's determined to win Viola over! The humor, the drama, and the romance make this book an absolute delight! This is a happy book
The duke is patient and kind toward Viola and he is quite charming. Viola is comfortable with him from the start. They talk about many subjects and their back and forth is witty and funny. Devin is willing to do whatever it takes to make Viola happy, which is adorable.

This book was illogical and full of plot holes. Everything just magically works out. I did enjoy Viola but overall wasnā€™t a huge fan.

Review originally published at Romancing Romances.

I received an eARC at no cost from the publisher, and I am leaving a voluntary and honest review. Thank you.

I have a feeling my opinion is going to be very different than most peopleā€™s, regarding this book.

I really like Eloisa Jamesā€™ books, but this one suffers from the same problem of a book Iā€™ve also read very, very recently. The plot is almost inexistent. Hey, if thatā€™s your thing, great! Itā€™s a light, fun, sexy book. But I warn you, the secondary characters have a more detailed story than the main ones.

Some people described this story as enemies to lovers. I donā€™t actually agree with that, as I donā€™t consider Viola and Devin to have been enemies at any point. She might have disliked him slightly in the beginning, but that changed so quickly that I canā€™t consider this an enemies to lovers trope. In fact, Iā€™m having a hard time defining a trope for it at all.

I liked Devin and Viola just fine ā€“ they were fun, Devin comes down from his high horse (hello Duke!), and Viola becomes more sure of herself throughout the book. And they have very romantic, loving, sexy, I would even say hot times, butā€¦ thatā€™s it. I reached 90% of the book and just thought: ā€œwell, thereā€™s nothing else of value happening nowā€, and I was right.

Soā€¦ this isnā€™t a bad book, or anything similar. Eloisaā€™s great writing skills definitely show through the book, but the plot was somewhat lacking. If youā€™re looking for a light, fun, simply entertaining book, that this is a great choice. Just donā€™t expect anything else.

P.S. I added a comment to this review about something that annoyed me in the book due to historical inaccuracy.

The author gave herself quite a challenge in creating a shy, nervous heroine. The story didn't really work for me -- the heroine miraculously discovers her spine so she has a totally different personality than the first chapters, and the story doesn't really go anywhere.
