Intense, atmospheric and twisty, The New Wife was certainly a gripping mystery thriller.

Synopsis –

Georgie, a single mother is elated that her son Sam is now marrying his childhood sweetheart Lauren. Especially given that Lauren’s parents - Tim and Helen are like her own family. But her happiness is short-lived when after three months, Lauren is found dead in their beautiful countryside home, which then leads to Sam being questioned by the police. As any mother would do, Georgie is determined to reveal the truth behind Lauren’s death and help Sam absolve himself from the charges.

Review -

The entire narrative is from Georgie’s POV – I found this to be a unique perspective and was handled well by the author. The eerie setting in the isolated cottage in the moorlands of Devon creates a sense of claustrophobia and evokes intrigue.

I loved how Watson explores the family dynamics between the two families. As she reveals their relationship over the years, she paints the picture of their personalities describing how their bonding and friendship evolved.

Georgie’s desperate search for answers, leads her to discover a dark web of secrets and lies with everyone she thought she knew well. Navigating through this maze, she realizes her naivety of believing everything at face value. None of them could be trusted and the mystery deepened with every chapter’s ending.

Though there were a few questionable points about the plot and the setting, this was undeniably a compelling and fast paced read. The big reveal wasn’t a major jaw dropper as the ending almost pin pointed us in the right direction. However, that did not spoil the enjoyment and did leave me gasping at the turn of events.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with the ARC in exchange of an honest review!

Does anyone truly know their friends and family? You would be very surprised in alot of cases with what goes on when they are home and behind closed doors. Nothing is usually as it seems..

I have read a few of Sue's books and I loved them so when i got approved for this arc i couldnt wait to dive in.i wasnt disappointed.

Sue has done it again. So many twist and turns and i couldnt stop guessing. I was at the edge of my seat the whole time.

I definitely recommebd

Pretty standard murder mystery for what it is. Didn’t guess the ending which is always good. Nice read.

Sam is marrying his childhood sweetheart, Lauren. Having been close friends with her new daughter in law's family since the two were in nursery school together, Georgie couldn't be happier for the young couple. Everything feels perfect as her son and his wife begin married life together in their new cottage at the secluded edge of Dartmoor. Just weeks after the wedding, Lauren is found dead. Georgie is determined to prove her son's innocence and find out what really happened on that fateful night, but the further she digs, the more she realises the people closest to her are hiding something and that Lauren had been keeping a dangerous secret.

This book is so good! It had me completely gripped and like all good psychological thrillers, everybody is acting suspicious and cannot be trusted, it was impossible for me to guess the killer - I went back and forth on so many characters and just when I thought the book was done with it's shocking twists, it was not! The narration by Tamsin Kennard was really good.

Sam is finally marrying his childhood sweetheart, Lauren, and his mother Georgie couldn't be prouder of him. He'd grown into a caring, compassionate man nothing like his abusive father. She can't wait for Lauren to officially be the Daughter she'd always wanted and to have even more family to love. It really was Happily Ever After.

Until it wasn't. Just three months later, she gets a call from Sam telling her Lauren was dead.

As the investigation starts, she can't help but feel there's something not quite right about the way Lauren died. Sam won't even look her in the eye, and she's starting to notice things about him, about his marriage that she didn't see before. So when she gets a chance to do a little investigation of her own while looking after their empty home, she finds out her daughter-in-law wasn't who she thought. It looks like everyone she loved was holding onto secrets that could be deadly … it's too late for Lauren, but hopefully not for her and Sam.

"Who really knows what a person could do, until they are tested?"

Sue Watson has always had a masterful control over the settings to her stories and this is no exception. In this gripping domestic thriller, Watson crafted the perfect location - using isolated, beautiful backdrops and contrasting it with horrifying events to keep the reader feeling very alone and in total suspense.

A real page-turner, full of whip-smart twists and misdirection, The New Wife truly keeps the reader guessing until the answer is right in front of you - leaving you suspicious of everyone and not knowing who to trust.

This hard-hitting, sinister story explores just how far people are willing to go for the people they love. We see the families fracture, each manifesting their grief and anger in different ways and not sure who's grieving and who's feeling guilty.

The Princess of Plot Twists strikes again with this one!
