This was profoundly depressing because of how poorly (and how recently) these people were treated. They were exploited, murdered, ignored, and abandoned. And this was not even the worst that’s been done to them. Interesting story but depressing.

Disappointing
The story is intriguing, but the writing is self-indulgent and wanders (sometimes seemingly aimlessly). In the hands of another author, this could have been a great book.

Read this for my literary journalism class and I’m glad I did. Grann did an amazing job as always with his amount of research and formatting a true crime to read like fiction. I was locked in until the very end and learned so much about Americas horrific history of injustice the Osage had and still endure. I had no idea and this was not even covered in schools and it should be. Honestly this should be a required reading.

Might be a better read than audio

Very interesting topic, very boring approach. Halfway through it was hard to follow which character was which and the story stretched out. This was very much a story of Mr. White for most of the book. I wish it talked more about the Osage experience rather than his.

I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for martin scorsese and that’s the weirdest thing about my reading this book. the author did an amazing job carefully researching & chronicling this devastating piece of history when american education systems WILL NOT!

Been waiting for this one for a while. Had heard great things so I was really excited to read it. I was into it, definitely some of the best narrative nonfiction I've read in some time. I thought the third section was the weakest and held the least interest for me. This is also one of those books that leaves you with a terrible taste in your mouth about the treatment of Native Americans in the US. Sad, but true.
Note to readers of the ebook: Back matter (Acknowledgements, Notes) takes up about 23%, so you are done when you get to 77%. Hate that, still thought I had quite a bit to go then BAM, done!
